Een brede strook langs de kust en ten noorden van de hoofdstad Lissabon ligt het wijngebied Lisboa. Het gebied is heuvelachtig en de grond bestaat vooral uit klei en kalksteen, met in de ondergrond graniet
Er is veel zon maar door de invloed van de Atlantische Oceaan is de temperatuur mild. Hierdoor zijn de wijnen uit Lisboa vaak elegant. Het gebied Lisboa als geheel is geclassificeerd als ‘Vinho Regional’, vergelijkbaar met het Franse IGP. Voorheen heette het Estremadura, maar vanwege verwarring met de gelijknamige dorre Spaanse regio is het gebied omgedoopt tot Lisboa.In de regio is het gebruikelijk om wijnen te produceren van meerdere verschillende inheemse druivenrassen die in Nederland nog niet veel bekendheid genieten. Denk hierbij aan de witte fernão pires, vital, arinto rabo de ovelha (letterlijk “schapenstaart”) en aan de blauwe druiven periquita, camarate en preto-martinho. Soms worden ze aangevuld met internationale druivenrassen.
