The Rheinhessen wine region is the largest wine-producing region in Germany in the region of the same name Rheinhessen (Rhine Hesse).
Area
The area is located in the triangle of Worms, Mainz and Bingen am Rhein, enclosed by the Rhine. There are 26,000 hectares of vineyards planted in this area. Most villages in this area have a history of wine growing. Rheinhessen has a varied terroir, with different soil types and microclimates. This makes it possible to produce different wine styles, from dry white wines to sweet dessert wines and sparkling wines. The soil consists mainly of loess, with some marl, sand, quartz and porphyry. Grapes
Rheinhessen is known for the cultivation of various grape varieties. Riesling is most common along the Rhine near Nackenheim, Nierstein and Oppenheim. Most red wine comes from the area around Ingelheim and Wonnegau. Blue grapes for red wine are mainly Portugieser, Spätburgunder and Dornfelder.
