Everything about the Arneis grape

Arneis is an Italian grape mainly used to make dry wine in the Piemonte region.

The grape is one of the most important white grape varieties of (northern) Italy. In the past, some Arneis was sometimes added to the red wines of the Nebbiolo grape to make them less harsh.

This is not an easy grape to grow and therefore has somewhat low yields. For about 30 years, attention shifted from quantity to quality, and Arneis came back into the picture because of its good taste characteristics. Since that time it has become very popular again and is one of the most important and highly regarded white wines from Italy.

The Arneis grows well on the sandy soils of the Roero. The grape produces medium-bodied, refined, and elegant white wines; grown in the Langhe, it produces wines with somewhat lower acidity and perhaps a bit less distinct. Malolactic fermentation is therefore usually not used to keep the wine nice and fresh. Not a wine for storing a long time, but evolves surprisingly with a slightly longer contact with oxygen.

This grape is known for its delicious white Roero Arneis wines, but also for Langhe wines.

Wine and food: Arneis wine

This wine goes well with Italian dishes such as fritto misto, pasta, and fresh salads. It is also delicious along with aioli and salsa verde. If you want to enjoy Arneis wine with meat, try veal dishes such as vitello tonnato or Wienerschnitzel. If you prefer fish, these wines go well with shellfish with a sour dressing, such as lemon dressing.
