antão vaz is een van de meest gewaardeerde variëteiten van de Alentejo, die tot voor kort bijna uitsluitend rond Vidigueira werd gekweekt. Zeer geschikt voor het warme en zonnige klimaat op de grote vlaktes van de Alentejo, betrouwbaar en productief, consistent in zijn rijping. De trossen zijn groot en niet te dicht opeengepakt, de druiven groot, met harde schillen. In de regel produceert het stevige, volle, goed gestructureerde wijnen. Gemaakt als een enkele variëteit, heeft het levendige aroma's, met hints van rijp tropisch fruit, mandarijnschil en iets mineraals, samen met een goede structuur en body. Als het vroeg wordt geplukt, geeft het wijnen met een levendig aroma en een frisse zuurgraad. Als hij langer rijpt, kan hij een hoog alcoholgehalte bereiken, waardoor hij een goede kandidaat is voor vatrijping. Het wordt vaak gemengd met Roupeiro en Arinto, die bijdragen aan een verfrissende zuurgraad.
