2016 Redheads Studio Le Bâtard
Not a drop of Chardonnay or Sauvignon to be seen, so Le Bâtard feels a bit like an outsider who has to prove his rightful place in the world, but Le Bâtard proves it - and with pleasure. The Bâtard is a blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Riesling - so a Rhône wine from Australia. The best fruit has been taken from locations in the Barossa and Clare Valley to make this treat. Hand-picked, lovingly cherished to produce an Aussie version of a classic from the Old World.
Light yellow color with clear, ripe fruit aromas and typical notes of dried herbs. Young and exuberant in honey-sweet peachy and candied lemon tones with clear acidity and a satisfying rounded creaminess. The time in oak has given a subtle oak wrap of cinnamon spices to the peach and citrus fruits.
The balance of the wine from rich fruit, firm texture and bite of acidity will be a top match for a casserole of chicken, potato and artichoke or a rich fish pie.

It all started with a few Aussie winemakers who went to France to show the 'old hands' some new tricks there. Australian wine had conquered the world in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why Tony Laithwaite brought some Aussies to France. It was there that the very beginning of RedHead's new viticultural movement was laid.
In a small shed in McLaren Vale, a former Indian restaurant, some winemakers took on the challenge of making their dream come true: making beautiful, creative wines in small volumes with primary focus on quality.
They wanted to make wines without being bothered by all kinds of business worries, which resulted in an explosion of creativity and experiments.
Meanwhile, winery Redheads is making great international progress and they still give young talents the opportunity to let their creativity and talents loose on the best grapes in the region.
