Cellers Augustus-Forum is a small winery in Spain that produces some fine wines. The winery is located in the Baix Penedès (province of Tarragona) and is one of the predecessors in Penedès. Mostly known for their Chardonnay, which can be called without a doubt the best in Spain. Wijnhuis Augustus planted its first vines in the 80s in a unique location only 3 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Augustus is a vineyard with a long history, bearing in mind the remains of what was once the Via Augusta, the ancient Roman road connecting Rome to the main cities of the Mediterranean. As a tribute to this road, the winery has therefore chosen the name Augustus. In addition to wines, Augustus winery also produces some vinegars. The Baix Penedès has a fairly dry Mediterranean climate with low average temperatures and light rainfall in winter. The site has a small microclimate due to the influence of the Mediterranean.

In 1990, when this project only started, there was still a search for quality wines in Catalunya. There was little to be found outside a number of large industrial companies. Joan Roca and Josep Puig decided after their return from Chile, together with a number of friends-partners (including many top chefs from Barcelona) to start a small-scale wine estate where quality wines were made with grapes from their own vineyard, a bit in the style of the French châteaux. They returned to their roots in the Baix Penedès and bought a piece with only poor land. Everyone thought they were crazy, but they knew that the best wines come from the poorest soils. In El Vendrell, on the slopes of the village of Sant Vicenç and with a view of the sea, they decided to plant their vineyards. They opted for the (at that time) modern French cépages such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. An additional advantage: throughout the domain were the remains of the Roman Via Augusta that used to run from Cádiz to Rome. In barely a few years, they have established themselves at the top of Spanish wines, and they are still there today. Almost by coincidence they also started to make wine vinegar with the addition of sweet grape must, until this also became more and more successful. The Forum was born! The production process and result are unique: the wine vinegar rests for years in oak barrels via a solera system. Today Forum vinegar is even more important to the domain than wine production!

Mainly French varieties are used, although in recent years they have also started making wines with local varieties (Xarel-lo, Garnacha, Macabeo, Malvasia de Sitges, Ull de Llebra ...). The Avgvstvs ("les Deveses") plot offers a beautiful vineyard of 12 hectares, of which 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon, 1/5 Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. The other grape varieties are not present on this farm, although they do have contracts with the owners of the plots and full control over the vineyards.

The vineyards of Les Deveses have stony, shallow soils and very good drainage; this automatically results in a low return over the entire area. The stones come from lime deposits. The climate is Mediterranean. The sea is close by (4 km), which has a major influence on the ripening of the grapes, as the sea breeze moderates the high summer temperatures and ensures mild winters.
