More information about styria

Styria is situated in the southeastern part of Austria, bordering Slovenia to the south. The region benefits from a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cool nights, which is favorable for grape growing. The diverse geography, including hills, slopes, and valleys, provides different microclimates that contribute to the variety of wines produced in the region.

Styria is particularly known for its white wine production, and the most prominent grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc. Styrian Sauvignon Blanc is often praised for its aromatic intensity, minerality, and crisp acidity. Other white grape varieties grown in Styria include Welschriesling, Morillon (Chardonnay), Gelber Muskateller (Yellow Muscat), and Traminer.

Styria produces a range of wine styles, from dry and crisp whites to fuller-bodied and complex wines. The region is known for its commitment to quality and the production of high-end wines. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, the region has gained recognition for its exceptional Morillon wines, which are made from the Chardonnay grape.

The Styrian Wine Road (Steirische Weinstrasse) is a popular route that takes visitors through picturesque vineyards, charming villages, and wine estates. It offers wine enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the region's winemaking heritage. Wine tourism is well-developed in Styria, with many wineries offering tastings, tours, and events. What about styria's subregions?

Styria, or Steiermark, is divided into three main winegrowing subregions, each with its own unique characteristics and wine styles. These subregions are often referred to as "wine districts" in Austria. Here are the three main subregions of Styria:

Südsteiermark (Southern Styria):

Südsteiermark is perhaps the most well-known and prestigious winegrowing region in Styria. It is located in the southern part of the province, bordering Slovenia. The region is known for its hilly landscapes, with vineyards planted on steep slopes. The combination of diverse soils and a favorable climate contributes to the production of high-quality white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc from Südsteiermark is often characterized by its intense aromatics, vibrant acidity, and distinctive mineral notes. The region is also known for producing excellent Morillon (Chardonnay) wines.

Weststeiermark (Western Styria):

Weststeiermark is situated to the west of Südsteiermark and is known for its hilly and forested landscapes. This subregion is recognized for a unique indigenous grape variety called Schilcher, which is used to produce a vibrant and refreshing rosé wine known as Schilcher. Schilcher wines are crisp, fruity, and often exhibit a distinctive pink color. In addition to Schilcher, other grape varieties are also cultivated in Weststeiermark, including Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller.

Oststeiermark (Eastern Styria):

Oststeiermark is the easternmost subregion of Styria and has a more diverse landscape that includes hills and plains. While not as widely recognized as Südsteiermark, Oststeiermark also produces notable white wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, and Traminer. The climate and soil variations in Oststeiermark contribute to the diversity of wine styles produced in this part of Styria.

Each subregion within Styria has its own unique terroir, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions. The wines from these subregions showcase the diversity and quality that Styria has to offer, making it an interesting and dynamic wine region within Austria. Exploring the wines from Südsteiermark, Weststeiermark, and Oststeiermark provides a deeper understanding of the richness of Styria's viticultural landscape.
