Mouton Rothschild Liqueur de Cassis

Every wine connoisseur and enthusiast has certainly heard about the wines of the iconic Mouton Rothschild , but a well-kept secret is that they also make a Liqueur and Eau de Vie. Served to the family's guests at private receptions at the chateau, the Eau-de-Vie de Prunes de Mouton Rothschild is a spirit long made by the estate in a centuries-old tradition started by Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902 - 1988).
Historically, Baron Philippe's intention was to continue the estate's time-honored tradition of mixed crops, encourage biodiversity and take advantage of the richness of its terroir. An orchard called "Les Pruniers" was planted with five varieties of plums (Alsace quetch, Nancy and Metz mirabelle, greengage and Ente plum), all essential for making plum spirit. The average age of the trees is now around 40 years. At the time, Baron Philippe de Rothschild had the right to distill distilled fruit from his own fruit for his own consumption.

The cellar masters combine their blending expertise with the exceptional terroir to give this artisanal plum spirit unparalleled quality and style. It expresses the essence of each plum variety, revealing rare elegance and uniquely concentrated aromas and flavours. From generation to generation, the cellar masters of Mouton Rothschild have passed on the secret of making plum brandy. It is distilled and then aged for about 15 years, partly in oak barrels, partly in demijohns. The majority of the bottles remain at the Château, but a few hundred cases go to the official importers/distributors of Mouton Rothschild wines and are then allowed to buy a single case of this special liqueur or eua-de-vie. The Eau-de-Vie de Prunes de Mouton Rothschild is presented in individually numbered bottles in a precious wooden box. It remains an exclusive item, produced in a very limited edition.

The blackcurrant liqueur traditionally served to the family's guests at private receptions held at the chateau is a delicious treat that is fully in keeping with the spirits produced at Mouton Rothschild. Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988) created this liqueur as a reflection of the estate's winemakers' mastery of art blending. At his instigation, cellar masters over the years went in search of complex aromas and flavors and a distinctive personality that would give Liqueur de Cassis de Mouton Rothschild its unique identity.
With respect for time-honored methods, Baron Philippe blended grape spirits, crafted in the estate's long tradition, with three types of blackcurrant. Noir de Bourgogne, Andega and Black Down flourish in the estate's exceptional biodiversity, the result of a mixed crop policy that has been practiced for generations. The blackcurrant bushes grow in the estate's orchards and the fruit is hand-picked in July at optimum ripeness. The berries are sorted twice with great care, crushed and then macerated in grape spirit in oak barrels for about 50 days, adding luscious oak notes to the liqueur. The fruit is then slowly and gently squeezed to extract the essence. Now Liqueur de Cassis de Mouton Rothschild is presented in individually numbered bottles in a precious wooden box. It remains an exclusive item, produced in a very limited edition.

The Liqueur de Cassis de Mouton Rothschild has aromas of ripe black currants which blend beautifully with black tea and hints of mint on the intense and concentrated nose. A nice acidity, oak, vanilla and peppery aromas emerge in the attack and linger on the palate, supported by an attractive freshness and leading to a beautifully long, fruity finish.
