France is one of the oldest and also one of the largest wine-producing countries in the world. The climate in France surely knows differences, but in general it is 'moderate-warm' which is favourable. France has an enormous diversity of suitable wine soils. Also the country always had enough oak trees to make barrels of, and the location of France in Europe caused a large wine trade in the early days already. Often, the best wines come from France.

This is because France is a country with many different types of soil, which makes it possible to produce many different types of wines. In addition, France is still relatively far to the north. This means that the grapes need a longer ripening period, so that the complex aroma substances can develop well and the good acids are retained. In addition, the French winegrowers have a lot of experience and have experimented a lot, so they know well where which wine can best be produced.

French wine has been produced for over 2000 years now. In France, there always was a lot of attention for research, education and regulations. In fact, France has one of the most extensive wine laws in the world. In this wine law they prescribed which grape variety should be planted, regulations about pruning, amount of yields per hectares and even the wine style. The rules are set to keep the authentic character of wines from a certain region. France has a lot of wine regions, some worldknown area's like Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Champagne, Alsace, Provence, Beaujolais, Languedoc-Roussilon and Loire.

France contains about 785,000 hectares of vineyards. Of these, about half of the vineyard area in all of France is AOP (Appelation d'Orgine Protegée). This is a new French term and it means the highest category of quality wine. If you have a wine from before 2011, you may also come across the name Appellation d'Origine Controlée or AOC, this was the term for 2011 for the highest category of quality wine in France.
