Weingut Stift Göttweig is known as one of the oldest wineries in Austria. As a Benedictine abbey, Stift Göttweig was founded in the year 1083 by Altmann van Passau (also known as Sint Altmann). Since that time, the abbey has always played an important role in the development of wine production in the Wachau Valley. Stift Göttweig is located between the rolling countryside on the south bank of the Danube opposite the city of Krems at 449 meters above sea level. Because of this location and the abbey, the winery is also called the Austrian Montecassino. The Benedictines were responsible for the administration and management until 1988, after which the property was rented out until 2005. Since 2006, winegrower Fritz Miesbauer and his team have been reliving history on the Stift Göttweig estate.
The vineyard where the grapes grow for the Stift Göttweig Riesling Furth is located near the village of Furth bei Göttweig. The vineyards around this village are favored by the atmospheric currents that come from the Dunkelsteiner forest. The combination of this air current and the natural humidity in the Danube region create balanced conditions that allow the grapes to grow optimally. The soil consists mainly of loess, loam and primordial rock. The microclimate and the typical soil composition are therefore the ideal basis for the Riesling that grows here. Once the grapes have been harvested and pressed, the must is vinified, after which the wine is allowed to age for another 4 months in stainless steel tanks, preserving the typical freshness.
The dry and fruity Stift Göttweig Riesling Furth gives ripe wild peaches and citrus fruits in the nose. Spicy and refreshing on the palate with notes of apricot, peach, lemon zest followed by a mineral undertone that ends in a pleasantly balanced aftertaste. Perfect combination with oriental cuisine, smoked chicken and fried fish.
