Villa Niederberger is one of the special estates of investor and wine connoisseur Achim Niederberger. Winemaker Hans-Günter Schwarz takes care of this small 0.8 hectare vineyard in Neustadt to perfection. He knows just about every vine personally, that's how far his concern goes. The vineyard is worked with great respect for nature. Winemaking is done here in the most natural way possible, based on hand-picked grapes. These are planted on beautiful eastern slopes, so that they are not in the full afternoon sun, so that they can ripen slowly. The wines are aged on the highest quality French oak and are completely dry, so made without residual sugar. Special Riesling, from a special vineyard. Made to drink straight away, can improve for at least four years

Grape variety: Riesling

Color : Pale straw yellow.

Smell : Wonderfully floral, apple and citrus, touch of smoky, some flint, typical of the special vineyard.

Taste : Lively and exciting, nicely dry and elegant, fine, nice acidity, despite the dry character not at all strict, but beautifully ripe. Light-footed and dry white wine.

Vineyard for 2022 Weingut von Winning Riesling Villa Niederberger

Weingut Von Winning has changed name - and owner - several times over the years. It was founded under the name 'Deinhard', by Friedrich Deinhard (1812 – 1871) and his wife Auguste Jordan, after she inherited part of her father's estate, Andreas Jordan's, in 1848. In Deidesheim this is still spoken of as the "Jordan'sche Teilung", with the estate's vineyards being divided among his three children, a division that has survived to this day. The winery under the name Deinhard was continued by their son Dr. Andreas Deinhard, who in turn was succeeded by his daughter Emma, who ran the company from 1907 with her husband, Captain Leopold von Winning. Under his leadership, the winery enjoyed its heyday. It became a co-founder of the “Deutscher Weinbauverband” and the “Verband der Naturwein-Versteigerer”, an association that is today very highly regarded under the name VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter). In this period the name of the domain was changed to "Hauptmann von Winning'sches Edelweingut". In 1918, the wine company became the property of Karl Josef Hoch from Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The Von Winning family did not allow him to use the name "von Winning", so it reverted to its old name: Dr. Deinhard. In November 2007, the entrepreneur Achim Niederberger became the new owner. He appointed Stephan Attmann as the new director. Within five years he managed to bring the three wine companies that had emerged from the "Jordan'sche Teilung" under one roof again. Not only did he own Dr. Deinhard, but also of the other two, Secret Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan and Reichsrat von Buhl, once owned by Andreas Jordan. He thus became the largest owner of private vineyards in Germany, with a total of 150 hectares. The three companies will continue to operate and develop independently of each other.

The total annual production is 250,000 to 300,000 bottles. The Riesling is by far the most important grape on the estate, with a planted area of more than 80% of the total of 38 hectares of vineyards. In addition, on the slopes of the domain we find pinot blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay, gewurztraminer and muscatel. Pinot Noir and a red blend are also made. Sauvignon blanc has also been in the range since 2008, because this grape thrives perfectly on the lighter soils of the region, with a high content of sand and gravel. The extensive planting of Riesling has everything to do with the special class of the domain's terroir. No less than 10 hectares of the winery are classified as 'Großes Gewächs', the German equivalent of the French concept of Grand Cru. The vineyards work entirely according to sustainable principles, everything focused on quality, so that perfectly ripe and aromatic grapes can be harvested. The young and motivated team is all about quality, helped of course by the investment power of Achim Niederberger. The pursuit of perfection is reflected in both the work in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Everything is done in the vineyard not to disturb the ecosystem of the vineyards, but to support it. The grapes have deep roots, so that they perfectly express the special character of the terroir in the wines. And as a result, they are also able to thrive perfectly under difficult conditions, such as extreme drought or heavy rainfall. They also do not suffer from a lack of water due to the undergrowth in the vineyard, a beautiful floral display in the summer. That is the way to work sustainably, and to ensure vineyards in which the natural balance is central. In the cellar, the principle of as little manipulation of the wine as possible is used. For the top wines we work with minimal filtration, natural and spontaneous fermentation and the omission of means to clarify the wine. This ensures wines with an authentic character, in an elegant style, that stand out from the crowd. The working method in vineyard and cellar therefore guarantees that wines are made here with a special character. Weingut von Winning stands for beautiful slim wines with a special appearance.
