A class wine, this elegant O Chao from winery Valdesil from Spain. This beautiful white wine, straw yellow in color, is subtle and elegant on the nose. Very fragrant and fresh with aromas of white flowers, white peach and a hint of balsamic spice. As this wine stays in your glass, even more aroma nuances are released, such as honey and pollen. In the mouth a surprising depth, and a pure taste. This very elegant wine has beautiful minerals, is excellently balanced and has class! The O Chao wine is almost a collector's item because only 600-700 bottles are produced per year.

As with all wines from this fantastic winery, a lot of love and care has been devoted to the processing of this wine. Fermentation took place for 2.5 months in a 500 liter French oak barrel with wild yeasts. The wine was then allowed to mature for another 6 months while remaining in contact with the sediment. And finally the wine spent another 15 months in a small 500 liter stainless steel barrel to settle before the wine was bottled.

O Chao is the name of a unique vineyard with only Godello grapes that was planted by Manuel Gayoso in 1941. This was during the period when Manuel was teaching theology at the Sanctuary in As Ermidas, located in the Spanish wine region of Valdeorras . There the wine was first used in the liturgical ceremonies. After Manuel's death, the wine was further marketed by winery Valdeslil at Manuel's express request. It is an example of extreme viticulture and is only harvested by experienced climbers because the vineyard is only 0.2ha located at an altitude of 600m but the slope is 46.50%!! This O Chado is therefore only made in the top years because all this effort only pays off if the fruit is fantastic.

The O Chao vineyard is the only one with a sand-granite soil, unlike the other wines (Montenovo, Valdesil, Pezas da Portela and Pedrouzos) produced by Valdesil at the time. The grapes for those wines all grew on a slate soil. This made the O Chao wine the first wine that Valdesil released that came from a different soil type.

Vineyard for 2022 Valdesil O Chao Godello

Gold was once mined in the Galician region of Valdeorras, the 'golden' valley, but today it is wine. In particular white wine from a special grape, godello and red wine from the grape Mencia. The variety grows on slopes and on plateaus around the river Sil and has been successfully transformed into fine wines. The Valdesil family domain is one of the most prominent houses that sources its grapes from all kinds of small plots, partly granite-containing, partly sandy, partly with slate. The sticks are often very old (top). Val De Sil has made the Godello and Mencia wines from the Valley de Sil famous.

Bodegas Valdesil is located in Vilamartín de Valdeorras in the deep west of Spain, approximately 180 km southeast of Santiago de Compostela. The history of the winery begins in the year 1885, when the winegrower José Ramón Gayoso began planting godello grape vines on the slate slopes of the Sil valley. Everyone made fun of him at the time. Although Gayoso later gave up the vineyard, the plants survived, and today the same genetic material is still used here. The modern history of the winery starts in 1991. In that year the Prada-Gayoso family brings the vineyards back in top condition. Today the winery covers 20 ha. Of these, many are small plots of old godello plants. Some vineyards are located at the best spots of Valdeorras, especially on the sunny slopes at Córgomo and Portel. The red grape variety mencía is also grown here. A total of six wines are made from both grape varieties. Bodegas Valdesil is one of the most reliable producers in Galicia, "a very reliable source for quality wines from Valdeorras", says Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
