This fine Pinot Noir from the German top winery: Weingut von Winning . The Pinot Royale is the successor to the Pinot Noir I and Pinot Noir II. The best qualities of the two predecessors are combined in this Pinot Royale. The name of the wine emphasizes the Burgundian character of this wine. Compared to its French counterpart, the German is slightly riper and more powerful in taste. The ripe red fruit comes out clearly and is nicely balanced with the spicy, slightly sweet aromas of the wood aging. The success of pinot noir in Germany is largely due to climate change and the growing expertise of local winegrowers. Producers (re)discover the best locations for pinot noir, clone higher quality plants and learn how to handle oak wood. The grapes for this Pinot Royale come from the vineyards planted on the Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker and Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad. The soils are diverse and include red sandstone, sandy clay, chalk,

In the glass, the Von Winning Royale is light ruby red. With aromas of dried red fruit, cranberry, spiciness, forest floor and beautiful, integrated aromas of the wood aging in the nose. A wine with many layers, which feels particularly soft in the mouth. Nice balance between the ripe and dried fruit, earthy tones and the spiciness of the wood aging. A juicy pinot noir that lives up to its name. As with all Pinot Noirs, drink this wine slightly cooled. Between 12-16℃ is the perfect temperature. This wine is delicious with duck breast with cranberry sauce. Also delicious with grilled green asparagus and also a fantastic (quality) glass to enjoy on the terrace or by the fireplace.

Vineyard for 2021 Weingut von Winning Pinot Royale

Weingut Von Winning has changed name and owner several times over the years. It was founded under the name 'Deinhard', by Friedrich Deinhard (1812 - 1871) and his wife Auguste Jordan, after inheriting part of the domain of her father, Andreas Jordan's in 1848. In Deidesheim this is still referred to today as the “Jordan'sche Teilung”, where the vineyards of the winery were divided among his three children, a division that has survived to this day. The winery under the name Deinhard was continued by their son Dr. Andreas Deinhard, who in turn was succeeded by his daughter Emma, who ran the company from 1907 with her husband, Captain Leopold von Winning. Under his leadership, the winery experienced its heyday. It became a co-founder of the "Deutscher Weinbauverband" and the "Verband der Naturwein-Versteigerer", an association that is today highly regarded under the name VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter). During this period the name of the domain was changed to "Hauptmann von Winning'sches Edelweingut". In 1918 the wine company became the property of Karl Josef Hoch from Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The Von Winning family did not allow him to use the name "von Winning", so it regained its old name: Dr. Deinhard.

In November 2007, the entrepreneur Achim Niederberger became the new owner. He appointed Stephan Attmann as the new director. Within five years he managed to bring the three wine companies that had emerged from the “Jordan'sche Teilung” back under one roof. He not only became the owner of Dr. Deinhard, but also of the other two, Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan and Reichsrat von Buhl, once owned by Andreas Jordan. He thus became the largest owner of private vineyards in Germany, with a total of 150 hectares. The three companies will continue to operate completely independently and will develop independently.
The total annual production is 250,000 to 300,000 bottles. The Riesling is by far the most important grape in the domain, with a planted area of more than 80% of the 38 hectares of vineyards. In addition, on the slopes of the domain we find pinot blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay, gewurztraminer and muscatel. Pinot Noir is also made and a red blend. Sauvignon Blanc has also been in the range since 2008, because this grape thrives perfectly on the lighter soils of the region, with a high content of sand and gravel.
The spacious planting of Riesling has everything to do with the special class of the domain's terroir. No less than 10 hectares of the winery are classified as 'Großes Gewächs', the German equivalent of the French concept of Grand Cru. The vineyards work entirely according to sustainable principles, everything focused on quality, so that perfectly ripe and aromatic grapes can be harvested. The young and motivated team is all about quality, helped by the investment power of Achim Niederberger, of course. The pursuit of perfection is expressed both when working in the vineyard and in the cellar.
In the vineyard, everything is done to not disturb the ecosystem of the vineyards, but to support them. The grapes are deeply rooted so that they perfectly express the special character of the terroir in the wines. And therefore they are able to thrive perfectly under difficult conditions, such as extreme drought or heavy rainfall. In addition, they do not suffer from water shortages due to the undergrowth in the vineyard, a beautiful floral display in summer. That is the way to work sustainably, and to ensure vineyards in which the natural balance is central.
In the cellar, the principle is applied of the least possible manipulation of the wine. For the top wines we work with minimal filtering, a natural and spontaneous fermentation and the omission of means to clarify the wine. This ensures wines with an authentic character, in an elegant style, that stand out from the crowd.
The working method in the vineyard and cellar therefore guarantees that wines are produced here with a special character. Weingut von Winning stands for beautiful slim wines with a special appearance.
