Description
Tornatore Etna Bianco
The Tornatore Etna Bianco is a beautiful mineral white Etna, with a good price/quality ratio. Made from the Sicilian Etna grape Carricante which is known for its beautiful acids. The wine has had no influence of wood and has matured on its own yeasts (sur lie). The wine has a golden-yellow color with green reflections. In the expressive nose one finds tones of grapefruit, white peach and herbs. The taste is rich, with a pleasant mineral tone, which provides an exuberant freshness!
The Tornatore wine estate
The Tornatore wine estate was founded by Francesco Tornatore, who originally worked in telecommunications. In the 21st century, he founded an impressive wine estate in Castiglione di Sicilia, located on the northern side of Etna, on volcanic soil. However, the family history goes back to 1865, when Francesco's great-grandfather already planted vineyards. This rich history of over 150 years is combined with modern wine-growing techniques.
High altitude vineyards and native grapes
The Tornatore vineyards are located at an altitude of between 600 and 1000 meters, which gives the wines a remarkable freshness and elegance. This location gives the red wines a Burgundian finesse, despite the warm climate of Sicily. The estate works exclusively with indigenous grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for red wines and Carricante for white wines. All grapes are picked by hand, which contributes to the high quality of the wine.
Vinification and maturation
In the wine cellar, much attention is paid to the preservation of the terroir. The wines are fermented in modern concrete vats and mature in large casks, so that little wood can be tasted in the wine. This results in very precise, elegant, fresh and drinkable wines that are also affordable by Etna standards. The Tornatore Etna Rosso has quickly gained recognition, with for example three glasses at Gambero Rosso and up to 95 points from James Suckling.
