Sindicat La Figuera started as a small cooperative in the Montsant Mountains, founded in 1932, producing wines of clarity and integrity and as of the 2020 vintage, this wine is made entirely by Rene Barbier and Sara Perez (you know about the Dido, Venus , Partida and the Clos Magador). One has to drive up the mountainside on very narrow, winding roads to reach the town of La Figuera, which is located at an altitude of 600 meters and has only 80 inhabitants. The city seems to rise from the top of the mountain, with the surrounding mountains and the Priorat region in view in all directions.

In the early 1930s, when the cooperative was founded, La Figuera was a bustling town; there were 25 residents who were involved in the establishment of the winery and who contributed grapes to the first harvest. Garnatxa, as the Catalans call it, has always been planted around La Figuera and has always been the main grape used for Sindicat's flagship wine. While Cariñena is typically blended with Garnatxa in Montsant, La Figuera is known for the beauty and elegance of their pure Garnatxa wines and is one of the few places where it is bottled on its own. The city prospered until the mid-1950s, when a major storm devastated the area and a strong frost the following year. Residents fled and many of the vineyards were destroyed and abandoned.

La Figuera never really regained its population, although a few dedicated citizens have replanted Garnatxa vines, and there are now just three passionate members who have vowed to keep the cooperative alive. Renowned Priorat winemaker René Barbier also learned about La Figuera's Garnatxa wines and decided to join forces with the members of the cooperative to help with winemaking. Rene says you can always tell when a wine is from La Figuera because there is a unique limestone content in the soil that makes the Garnatxa lighter. In addition to preserving these special wines, René also wanted to keep alive the heritage of the people's cooperative movement, a movement that began in Catalonia's post-phylloxera era in the early 20th century.

Sindicat La Figuera works with 25 hectares of Garnatxa Fina and the vines range in age from 20-70 years. The Garnacha 2020 Sindicat La Figuera is made by René Barbier (from Clos Mogador, among others). It is a characteristic and rustic red with the chalky tannins of the limestone soils and the scent of the Garnacha from the village. Wines are fermented with wild yeasts in underground concrete tanks with minimal temperature control, where they are aged on fine lees for approximately 9 months before being bottled with light fining and filtration. It's a great accessible wine. Red fresh fruit, the typical mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant, fresh and juicy, that's the best way to summarize this delicious wine and it's not surprising that even this very affordable wine from Rene Barbier has been awarded 90/100 Parker points since 2018. The 2021 itself 91/100

Fact: An old label has been recovered and used for this old style, authentic red.

Vineyard for 2021 Sindicat La Figuera Vi Sec Garnatxa Fina

René Barbier (fourth generation of the same name !!!) started in the world of wine in 1992 at Clos Mogador with his father, the other René Barbier, the bearded and dedicated more than 20 years of his life to wine there. The first 10 years he worked mainly in the winery and then mainly in the vineyards and learned that unique land brings unique wines. This has now been proven with the iconic Clos Mogador, Venus Universal and Espectacle wines. In 2001 Rene Barbier had the opportunity to buy a small very old "coster" (steep sloping, traditional) vineyard called Els Bellvisos. This vineyard was abandoned and it was fascinating, in the middle of a steep quarry of holm oaks, the views and the absolute inhospitability are spectacular. It was during this same period that another major influence came into Rene's life in the form of Sara Pérez, his current wife and partner. The daughter of José Luis Pérez, one of the most important figures in the Spanish wine world.

Together with Sara they have brought the Bellvisos vineyard back into production. It was an uncompromising place, but one that offered the chance to make a wine that was one with nature. They started this project based on their philosophy of life: a sustainable, organic project where they could close the circle of life. This fascinating place known as Bellvisos (Bella Vista - Beautiful View) is an extremely steep "coster" or sloping vineyard which, due to the structure of the Llicorella or slate soil, makes it impossible to build vineyard terraces. It was abandoned 40 years before herbicides and chemical pesticides were available so was already completely original organic and biological. There are no neighbors because of the steep slopes around it: not even the bravest would plant a vineyard here! As a result, the area has been in perfect balance for a long time.

Ten years ago they started pruning and the abandoned vines at Bellvisos were brought back into production. They use a mule and hand plowing alternated with cutting the weeds. We apply herbal tea and milk whey as fertilizer and constantly walk through the vines. All manual and aimed at maintaining balance between the freshness of the plot and the depth that is typical Priorat (that which makes the wines so unique). We decide when to harvest based on our taste buds and our intuition… according to a very personal criterion. We prepare each wine in the vineyard by reproducing the wild yeasts ourselves that will lead to a natural alcoholic fermentation, preserving the different aromas according to each vintage.

The Bellvisos and the Partida del Pedrer wines come from this great unique, authentic vineyard in the heart of the Priorat.
