2021 Quinta de Soalheiro Vinho Verde Alvarinho Reserva
The Alvarinho Reserva Vinho Verde comes from old vines. The wine spent 11 months in 35% new French oak. Only the finest and most concentrated grapes are used for this top wine, which benefit from an education with batônnage (stirring the groin) in oak barrels. The wine is nice and tight and dry (less than two grams of sugar and 5.5 grams of total acidity). The wooden upbringing makes this Alvarinho (Albarino) even more handsome than it already is by nature. The wine is now beautifully balanced in its youth and gets better with age. The Alvarinho Reserva has a beautiful complex nose with ripe fruit notes, minerals, field flowers and something of brioche. The wine has an impressive structure and intensity, with ripe and generous fruit, minerals, good juice, a light toast and brilliant acidity in the aftertaste.
Quinta de Soalheiro is located in the northernmost point of Portugal, in the sub-region of the Vinho Verde area, called Monção e Melgaço. Protected by a mountain range in the north, the vineyards are ideally located for growing the Alvarinho grape, with just enough of everything: sun, heat and rainfall. It was these unique circumstances that led João Antonio Cerdeira to plant his first alvarinho vineyard here in 1974. João has since been succeeded by his children Luis and Maria, who have further developed and perfected the company. Everything is done here with a great sense of detail. The vineyards are cultivated organically and the winemaking process has only one purpose: to make pure and harmonious wines. Soalheiro has a great reputation both in Portugal itself and abroad.
