2021 Puglia Pop Luminaria

The Puglia Pop Luminaria Luminaria Primitivo di Manduria is a red wine made from 100% Primitivo which grow according to the old Alberello method with a very low yield of a maximum of 1kg per vine. Primitivo is the best-known red grape variety from Puglia. Under the name Zinfandel, it is grown in the United States of America, especially in California, where it is one of the most widespread and valued red grape varieties. The name "Primitivo" comes from the characteristic early ripening of the vine, compared to the other varieties. One of the main characteristics of Primitivo is first of all the large amount of sugar contained in the berries which can consequently produce wines with a high alcohol content, a combined property of a significant content of anthocyanins in the skins, these are the substances that give the color to the wine.

With the albarello method, the vines are not supported by poles or iron wire, so the vines form a low shrub that resembles a small tree (Alberello means 'young tree' in Italian). It is very expensive to grow grapes this way, because far fewer vines can be planted per hectare, the amount of manual work in the vineyard because there is no machine involved, and the low yields. The advantage, however, is that the grapes are of very high quality and this is certainly noticeable with the Luminaria.

The harvest takes place at the beginning of September and is carried out entirely manually, after which the grapes are immediately pressed, after which the must remains on its lees and with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks for more than a month. After this, the wine is transferred to amphorae made of clay where it is allowed to mature for 6 months followed by another 6 months in French and American oak barriques. Ultimately, the wine is bottled in its very innovative bottle, which insulates the wine 45% better against temperature changes and 100% protects it from light than a normal wine bottle. This keeps the wine fresh for longer and allows you to drink the wine as the winemaker intended, without unpleasant external influences. The bottle is also 100% recyclable and contributes to social projects in Puglia.

The deep, intense ruby red wine displays broad nuances of ripe fruit such as raspberry, blackcurrant and aromas of plum and cherry coming together with intriguing notes of chocolate, coconut and coffee. The taste is rich and very concentrated with spicy and fruity notes, enhanced by a consistent presence of beautifully blended tannins. This together also makes the Luminaria a real meditation wine.
