2021 Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir
Cloudy Bay is New Zealand's wine reference and the most internationally renowned brand. It is one of the five first wineries from Marlborough, New Zealand's best wine region (at the northernmost tip of the South Island). A highly sought-after range of wines, each offering a different experience.
Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir is a classic Pinot Noir, lively and beautifully balanced. A kaleidoscope of red fruit and cherries, oak and spices with soft tannins. The grapes come from 20 year old vines from various vineyards in the southern Wairau Valley, including the Mustang and Barrack vineyards. The typical clay soil with a top layer of alluvial gravel has good drainage which minimizes stress on the delicate Pinot Noir vines in the dry summer months. The grapes are picked at night to maximize intense fruit flavors. Drink the wine slightly chilled and taste the elegance! The destemmed grapes are kept cold in stainless steel tanks for a few days and then fermented with their skins for almost 3 weeks. The wine has matured for 1 year in French oak barrels, of which 35% new wood.
In the glass, the Cloudy Bay Pinot noir has a light red-purple color with plum-colored tones. The nose is attractive and aromatic with notes of Morello cherries, blackberries and dark chocolate. In the glass, the wine unfolds layered with delicate floral aromas and subtle spices around a concentrated core of plums. Fine, silky tannins and juicy acidity give the wine an elegant structure. The subtle influence of oak adds some complexity and a hint of wood smoke. Conclusion: A long and refined aftertaste of an intriguing and seductive wine. Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir is consistently well rated by experts and trade press. The Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir is best served at a serving temperature between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius. The wine has at least another ten years of maturing potential.
