Ownership of the Rieussec estate dates back to the 18th century, when it was in the hands of the Carmelites. After the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, the estate was publicly auctioned as a national heritage site. Since that time, Château Rieussec has undergone a change of ownership, with the most recent purchase taking place in 1984 when it was acquired by the famous Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite family. At the time of this takeover, the estate covered 110 hectares, of which 68 hectares were intended for wine growing.

Château Rieussec has been awarded the title of 1er Cru Classé in Sauternes. After the management of Rieussec by the Rothschild family, measures were taken to improve the quality of the wine. This included the construction of a new cellar, as well as a rarer harvest that led to a reduction in Grand Vin production. Sometimes the selection is so strict that no Grand Vin is produced, as evidenced by years such as 1977 and 2012. Today, Rieussec is one of the largest products in Sauternes and Barsac, with an area expanded to 93 hectares. The vineyards extend to the border of Fargues and Sauternes and mainly produce Sémillon (90%) together with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

The presence of Botrytis cinerea, better known as noble rot, is essential for the production of Sauternes, but not all grapes ripen at the same pace. Consequently, the harvest period is usually 6 to 8 weeks. The low yield per vine produces an average of only one glass of wine per vine. Fermentation takes place in wooden barrels, with each parcel undergoing a separate fermentation process, which allows precise selection of Grand Vin. After fermentation, the wines undergo maturation in wooden barrels, ranging from 16 to 26 months. It was clear early on that the yield for that 2021 vintage would be very low. Rieussec 2021 has aromas of dried apricots and oranges with some smoky notes from aging in wooden barrels. The wine is complex and has fine acidity together with the flavors you can expect from a top class Sauternes.
