2020 Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame

The Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame comes from vineyards in the cru Meriame in the comune (municipality) Serralunga d'Alba in Barolo. Paolo Manzone owns a large part of the vineyards in Meriame. The oldest vines are 70 years old and therefore extremely suitable for producing typical Meriame wines. He uses the grapes from the oldest vines from the most beautiful plots to make the very noteworthy Barolo Meriame. In his Barolo Serralunga d'Alba, Paolo Manzone also only uses grapes from Meriame, the vines of which are about 25 years old.

The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 350 metres and are oriented towards the south/southeast. The soil consists mainly of clay and limestone. The oldest vines are about 70 years old. The fermentation of the noble Nebbiolo grapes takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine then matures for 24 months in wood, of which at least 50% in large vats of Slavonian wood (1,500 litres) and the rest in French tonneaux (350 litres) of which 30% is new.

In the glass, the Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame is ruby red with a nose of dark cherries, dried fruit, coffee, rose petals, tar and vanilla.
In the mouth the Meriame has a full, powerful taste, the fruit, tannins and wood are nicely balanced. Delicious with charcuterie, for example bresaola, salami and spicy sausage. Also delicious with a stew with beef and mushrooms.

ABOUT MERIAME
Meriame is the Barolo cru on the rise. The popularity of the cru Meriame is relatively new. Paolo Manzone's eponymous Cascina Meriame has certainly played a role in this. Since 1999 he has been making beautiful Barolos, including a 100% Meriame. Meriame forms a kind of amphitheatre that protects the vines from winter frost and summer heat. There is always a good balance between heat and humidity. The soils from the Lequio formation are chalky and provide strength and structure. Substantial wines with an earthy character come from the best parts of the cru Meriame, in the middle and upper parts. The wines from the lower part are more elegant in style.
