Jean-Nicolas Méo is widely regarded as one of the very best producers of red Burgundies. His wines have a unique style. They possess a sensual velvety structure, complexity, richness, depth and an enchanting perfume. They are very reminiscent of the wines of the recently deceased Henri Jayer (according to many the greatest winemaker in the modern history of Burgundy). This is not surprising, Jean Méo learned the trade from Jayer and he was associated with Méo-Camuzet as an advisor for a long time.
The Pinot Noir grapes for the Méo-Camuzet Nuits St Georges Villages come from a plot of about one and a half hectares, located in "le Bas de Combes" and bordering Vosne-Romanée. This explains the clear resemblance of the wine to this appellation. Apart from that, the terroir is very nice: right at the foot of the hill in very fine soil. The vines are on average 60 years old and have a very low yield. The clusters are often no bigger than a large pine cone, but the extraction and aromas that these small grapes give are unprecedented. There is no intervention or corrective action required in the winery. The basis for a good wine is a healthy vineyard.
There is a lot of roundness and friendliness in the Méo-Camuzet Nuits St Georges Villages. It flatters on the palate and immediately conquers you thanks to its excellent balance of fruit, alcohol and acidity Hard to guess the terroir of Nuits ... Or maybe the nose, a little wilder than in Vosne.
It is almost impossible to resist this wine when it is very young, but it also ages perfectly. In this respect, the 87 or 89 volumes are still remarkable.
The wine ages fairly quickly in barrels, in keeping with the gracious character it will develop later on. It can very well take new oak without becoming bombastic (about 50%) and this adds to the structure of the wine.
