2020 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière
The Lamy family has been working in the vineyards of Saint-Aubin in Burgundy since 1640. In 1973, after many years of working with his father, Hubert Lamy founded Domaine Hubert Lamy. At that time, the domain consisted of no more than 8 hectares, mainly located in regional appellations. Today, the domain extends over 18.5 ha, of which 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, spread over the Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay appellations. As a treatment against diseases and pests, they work "lutte raisonnée" or with integrated pest management: products that respect nature and are used only when necessary. For the last 10 years, no chemical fertilizers have been used in the vineyards, only organic compost.
The chardonnay grapes for the Clos de la Chateniere come from a south-east facing 1er cru vineyard between the villages of Gamay and Chassagne-Montrachet. The soil of the vineyard consists mainly of calcareous clay, with many stones. The vines were planted in 1964, and the vineyard covers an area of 1.25 ha. The harvest is completely manual. The grapes are transported in small containers to prevent damage.
The white chardonnay grapes are pressed very gently. The last press juice as well as the juice of the young grapes is vinified separately, so that only the very best part is used for the AOC wines. After 12 to 18 hours, the solid cloudy parts of the must are separated (this results in more fresh and lively wine). and the wines are fermented in 228 liter barrels. The fermentation takes a very long time, about 90 days. The barrels are originally Vosges, Troncais or Allier, 20% new. Bottling takes place in September, after clarification and very gentle filtration.
The Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière has a clean and precise bouquet with white peach, orange and subtle anise scents. The palate is very well balanced with depth and fruit intensity with notes of white peach laced with bitter lemon, leading to a harmonious and quite long creamy finish. A beautiful wine with great aging potential. Parker writes: "....this is built to age"
