Brakkuil Farm is home to the Gedeel Wijnen. It is a unique wine farm located in the St. Helena Bay region on South Africa's west coast. The vineyards are planted in the flattened sea sand filled with limestone, located just 4 km from the cold Atlantic Ocean.
The Brakkuil farm was established in the early 1800s, while the first grapes (Barbarossa and Palomino) were planted in 1978. The original wine cellar is still in use and was built in 1948 after the end of the Second World War.

In 2002, farm owner Wimpie Bouwer (father of winemaker John Bouwer) planted 6ha of the first Sauvignon Blanc vines used today to produce a unique Sauvignon Blanc. John also produces a Palomino "matured under veil" and a superb Barbarossa. This is a limited edition variety grown on the only Barbarossa hectare (one of four planted in the world in 1978) in Southern Africa. The soil and terroir of farm Brakkuil consists largely of sea sand with limestone on the bottom, which gives the wines a low pH level.

The Gedeelte Wines 23 Palomino is a unique wine, but in the end it also fits a unique winery such as Gedeelte Wines. The Palomino is produced with the grapes of this traditional Spanish variety planted here in 1978 on the Brakkuil farm. The vineyard at the foot of "Klein Tafelberg" (Little Table Mountain) a stone's throw from the cool atlantic ocean. The soil consists of limestone-rich coastal soil - greatly contributing to the subtle notes of the Palomino's natural sea salt minerality.

During harvesting, the grapes are pressed and the juices are placed in tanks until the primary fermentation is successfully carried out.
It is then when the veil of yeast over the wine (flor) begins its process for several months. After this process, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels where the wine is allowed to age or mature in peace for around 9-12 months. This Volume 23 Palomino has the style of ala de Equipo Navazos Ovni Palomino - beautifully nice and dry white with some oxidative yeast tones as if a light touch of sherry. The wine has a complex nose dominated by minerality and tropical fruit with aromas of white flowers, fragrant notes of bread and balsamic notes. This wine has been aged under a veil (flor) of yeast and these notes are best enjoyed when tasted between 3° and 6°C - so serve very cool. This is an ultimate wine with seafood such as a Fruit du Mer

John Bouwer strongly believes in traditional winemaking and he ages his wines “under veil” without conventional cooling methods.

"It's important to us to create something unique. A trend that goes back to the beginnings of traditional winemaking. It's the craftsmanship of understanding the grape's culture and following one-on-one from vineyard to bottling .
Making wine is a feeling, an emotional process..."
