It is not entirely clear where the name of this vineyard comes from, but it is suspected that it has to do with pear trees; poiriers. This is one of the first vineyards the Faiveley family purchased for their wines. In the book 'Histoire et Statistique de la Vigne des Grands Vins de la Côte d'Or' an influential work from 1855 on viticulture in Burgundy, this vineyard was already classified as one of the best in Nuits Sainte George. The vineyard is located on the east side of Nuits-Saint-Georges on a soil of brown limestone and gravel, this 1.6 hectares of vineyard where the Pinot Noir produces powerful wines. The Premier Cru Vineyard of the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts-Saint-Georges has a dead bottom which consists of brown gravel, very calcareous. The total area of the appellation is 7ha35a, of which 1ha68a is owned by Domaine Faiveley. The vineyards have an eastern exposure. The vines were planted in 1957, 1958, 1975, 1986 and 2005 and the annual production averages 8,000 bottles.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts-Saint-Georges unfolds in the glass with aromas of wild berries, cassis, candied zest, incense and spices, gently framed by new oak that has already been nicely integrated. On the palate the wine is medium to full, supple and fleshy, with ripe but lively acidity, a fleshy core of luscious fruit and fine framing tannins, ending with good length in the finish.
About Faiveley
The history of Domaine Faiveley goes back to 1825. The domain has been family owned for 7 generations and is located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy. 127 ha Vineyards, spread over Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, including 12 vineyards with Grand Cru classification, 25 with Premier Cru classification and 6 vineyards with a “Monopole” classification. The domain is managed by Erwan Faiveley, who keeps the work in the vineyards in-house in order to have control over the quality of the grapes. The hand-picked harvest is carefully brought to vaulted cellars from the 19th century, located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. To make great Burgundies, Erwan Faiveley combines the principles of modern oenology with traditional aging in French oak barrels. All this contributes to the fact that Faiveley wines are held in high esteem.
