Around Châteauneuf-du-Pape stretches a landscape of gently sloping slopes and sometimes large plateaux. The characteristic soil is reddish earth covered with round boulders, small and large: Galets or Caillous roulés. These were carried along by the Rhone glacier at the time. In some places the cobblestone layer is one and a half to two meters thick. The stones ensure that the grapes are fully ripe, because during the day they collect solar heat to radiate it again at night. 13 grape varieties are allowed to make Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the wine is therefore always a blend (composition of different grape varieties). Each variety adds something unique to the wine. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a fairly rare, surprisingly beautiful wine of a high level.
Paul Durieu created Domaine Durieu in 1976. It is located in the heart of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, across the street from the old St Theodoric's Chapel. This historic building has known several owners, who have always kept its authenticity. Originally built by Senozan's Marchioness, in 1615, then granted to Jean Le Power, an Irish nobleman in the wine trade; then become a barrel workshop.
The Domaine Durieu Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc comes from a vineyard located on sandy soil in the north of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. Harvested by hand with maturation in stainless steel vats for 8 months sur lie and only a very light filtration before bottling. In the glass, the Durieu Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc has a beautiful light straw yellow color with gold leaf tones with in the nose notes of white plum, white pear, white apple flesh and subtle notes of Williams pear inlaid in cognac with some waltzes. In the mouth, the wine has a smooth and silky attack, where the acidity and alcohol go hand in hand and provide a remarkable balance. This wine is wonderful to drink young, but can also be kept for another 5-10 years. A white Chateauneuf du Pape is an ideal dining wine and is a nice companion for oa
pickled cod, lobster or with Thai food.
