Secretum sub malleo est , the secret is under the hammer! This is the motto at Château VIEUX MAILLET, located in a place called Maillet in the municipality of Pomerol ! This is because our wine is still a secret. It is discreetly distributed in France by more and more wine lovers and in the rest of Europe and the world by discerning merchants and prestigious tables. They all agree that Vieux Maillet has the qualities of a Grand Vin de Pomerol at an accessible price.
Pomerol is an appellation, recognized in 1936, with only 785 hectares of vines, one of the smallest in the Bordeaux region, bordered by the city of Libourne to the west and by the Saint-Emilion appellation to the east, by the Lalande de Pomerol appellation to the north. And this appellation is often described as the most Burgundian of Bordeaux. Unlike certain rare prestigious properties of the appellation, Vieux Maillet brings together parcels of vines in different geographical points, such as the heights of the AOC Pomerol. In 2004, when Château Vieux Maillet was bought, the area of vines was less than 2 hectares. Today it is 8 hectares and 65 ares in size (or rather: small). The first section of vineyards is around the Chateau The second in a place called Cantereau. This allows a slightly larger production of Grand Vin, but above all to play with the plots according to the climate of each vintage, blending Merlot with a real dose of Cabernet, Franc and Sauvignon. Merlot now represents 85% of the blend, Cabernet Franc 10% and Cabernet Sauvignon 5%. The soils are clayey, calcareous and gravelly.
The Château Maillet Pomerol is opaque purple. Complex and opulent bouquet of Crème de Cassis, cedar, cherry, rose, graphite and truffle. Rich and broad on the palate with loads of grip and energy, full of black cherry, blueberry, sweet cassis, cedar and toast. With the characteristic fat 'Pomerol clay texture', fine soft tannins and an excellent freshness for balance. The 2020 vintage has received no less than (94-95)/100 points from Suckling and (90-92)/100 from Parker. A beautiful Grand ru Pomerol at an equally attractive price.
