Château Léoville Barton has been a family heritage for 300 years. Founded in 1722 when Thomas Barton left his native Ireland to settle in Saint Julien and started a wine business there. In 1826 his grandson, Hugh Barton bought a 50 hectare vineyard located in the Saint Julien appellation. In the historical classification of 1855, the Chateau already received the classification of "Second Classified Growth". The property was managed through the different generations over the years until Anthony Barton raised Château Léoville to the level of international recognition it now enjoys. Barton's story continues with his daughter, Lilian, and her two children, who are now writing the chapter of the 10th generation.
The vineyard nestles in the heart of the St Julien terroir under the most beautiful slopes of Garonne gravel, coming from the Gironde. The clayey gravel substrate allows excellent growing conditions and ensures a consistently high quality for both wet and dry years. There is dynamic work in the vineyard such as plowing the soil, weeds and grass grow in the vineyard in order to get a good bio-diversity and no poison/herbicide is used.
The Léoville Barton is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with Merlot. The harvest is done entirely by hand. After de-stemming, the berries are carefully sorted, crushed and poured into wooden barrels that are thermally regulated. They are vinified per plot. The alcoholic fermentation lasts from 7 to 10 days and the maceration is about 3 weeks. The wine is then aged between 16 and 18 months in French oak barrels of which 60% is brand new. The wine matures in an impressive cellar kept at 15 °. The wine barrels are topped up 3 times a week to avoid contact between the wine and the air. The nose is intense, expressive minty, spicy and black fruit aromas. On the palate, the flavors of blueberries and blackcurrant and hints of white pepper. The tannins are delicate and velvety. The wine is pure, balanced and its strength is exponential.
93-95/100 Parker & 97/100 Suckling
FACT: It is worth mentioning that we buy the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never buy through the middlemen because we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly in our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored. There is a lot of fake on the market. Via the Leoville Barton website you can authenticate the bottle based on the number on the bottle. Click here for the authentication
