2020 Château La Dominique
Ideally located northwest of Saint-Emilion, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation, the 29 hectares of Château La Dominique, owned by the Fayat family since 1969, are distinguished by a remarkable terroir, whose excellent plots border the most famous vineyards of the region - Cheval Blanc, Figeac, La Conseillante, L'Evangile.
The Château La Dominique Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) 2020 is an eye-opener. The wine is a blend of 91% Merlot - 7% Cabernet franc and 2% Cabernet sauvignon. Warm, dry summer weather caused the vine to naturally dry out, which in turn produced a Dominique of unusual depth and concentration. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare, as opposed to 50 in 2019 and 46 in 2018, which seems to be working so well to give 2020 a little something extra. Despite all its richness, the 2020 remains bright and full of energy. Red colored fruit, pomegranate, cinnamon, menthol and rose petals all open effortlessly, but it is the sheer textural resonance of the wine that impresses the most.
