Bernhard Ott says of himself: 'Ich bin ein Veltliner' and is a household name in Austria: he is even called Mister Veltliner. This has to do with his not insignificant stature, but much more with the quality of his grüner veltliners. The company is located in Niederösterreich in the Wagram, almost against Kamptal and was founded in 1889. From the village of Feuersbrunn, which lies in the plain of the old Danube basin, the 'Kellergasse' runs up into the vineyards. The vineyards are therefore all close to the domain, mostly in Wagram and a small part in Kamptal and are at an altitude between 200 and 350 meters. The soil consists mainly of loess carried by the wind, varying in depth from 1 to 20 meters and often mixed with gravel. Bernhard has been at the helm since 1993: he was 21 at the time, but his parents gave him the confidence to make the wines independently and they have not regretted it! For example, Bernhard was the first producer from Wagram in the Falstaff to be chosen as 'Winzer des Jahres' and his Rosenberg 2015 at Parker received 94-96 points. The wines are very pure and precise and have become increasingly fine and subtle over the past 15 years. Since 2006, biodynamic work has been carried out.
The Stein Vineyard is an exception in several respects. It is the only one in the Kamptal with a loess terroir, but also other geological formations such as chalk, clay and the specific Gfoehler Gneiss, which was deposited thousands of years ago by a side arm of the Danube. The climate in this vineyard is slightly fresher than the other vineyards and this gives the wine a slender structure. In addition, the vines benefit from humus-rich soil and biodynamic cultivation. The Bernhard Ott Gruner Veltliner Stein first low (1OWT) is incredibly complex and you constantly smell different herbs. The wine has a wonderful balance between intensity and delicacy on the palate with a very long mineral finish. Ready to drink now but can easily stay in the cellar or cellar for 20 years or more
