In 1962, 19 winemakers, determined to demonstrate the high potential of wines from Salento, founded "Cantine San Marzano". In addition to their well-known wines from Puglia, they also have vineyards in Sicily across the heel of Italy's boot. RARI is the name of this small Sicilian wine line. It is the oenologists of the famous CANTINE SAN MARZANO who dared to jump over the water to the beautiful island to look for suitable vineyards: they found what they were looking for in the northwest of Sicily, in the hills around Gibellina and in the valley near Belice. They have tracked down older vines from Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Syrah and Grillo and are now making the San Marzano Rari series. Reduced yields and professional cellar work result in wines with the typical style that has made SAN MARZANO famous: fruity, drinkable, full and spicy and at affordable prices! It is a modern, recognizable and original line of typical Sicilian wines
The RARI Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane is made from the grape for which Sicily is best known, namely the Nero D'Avola. The vineyards are located in Gibellina hills. The area is about 200 meters above sea level. The soil is rich in clay and limestone, iron oxides. The vineyards have a planting density of 4,000 plants per HA. This high planting density results in low yields and forces the plants to root deeper due to competition. The grapes are selected and vinified by the oenologists of CANTINE SAN MARZANO. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel, after which the wine is aged for several months in oak barrels. The Rari Nero D'Avola has a very intense, radiant ruby red color in the glass. This Sicilian has a beautiful bouquet of black cherry and raspberry jelly complemented by a hint of cocoa and vanilla. Complex on the palate, harmonious with a long, spicy finish. Delicious with savory snacks with thinly sliced meat and salami and firm cheese.
