Armenia, a country in the South Caucasus, is the oldest Christian country in the world. Wine has been made here for 6,000 years. Despite this impressive history and dozens of ancient, indigenous grape varieties, Armenia is an almost forgotten wine country.
Karas is without doubt the most prominent winery from Armenia and that is certainly because it has the most famous wine consultant and winemaker Michel Rolland make the wine. The winery is located in the Ararat Valley where the soil is of volcanic origin. It has slightly eroded clay formed by basalt, with high levels of carbonate and limestone, volcanic tuff and alluvial rocks. The valley has a continental highland climate with hot summers and cold dry winters.
Karas also has on his labels: 6,200 years Crafting Wine and there are very few houses that can put this on their label
The Karas Classic Red is a blend of Syrah, Cot, Cabernet Franc and Tannat. The fragrance is pronounced with notes of black fruit, tarragon and ground pepper. The taste is serious; bite due to a good structure, fine tannins, black fruit and good length in which a 'droppy' taste remains. All in all, this is a full-bodied wine with character.
