The Vaucoupin Premier Cru vineyard is considered one of the best premier cru vineyards in the whole Chablis. This Gilbert Picq Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin is therefore a Chablis of absolute top class. Domaine Gilbert Picq created here a beautiful glass of wine that is rich and powerful, smoky, with notes in the scent and a mouth-filling taste, in which we find a lot of fat and a nice butter. This Chablis goes perfectly with fish, especially fish with a rich sauce, but also goes excellent with white meat or foie gras.
This Chablis is a beautiful light golden yellow in color with aromas of flowers on the nose, slightly closed, citrus fruit and a hint of banana. The taste is rich and powerful, with lots of white fruit, nice acidity, a pleasant bitterness and a long aftertaste.
As mentioned, Vaucoupin is considered one of the best 1er cru vineyards of the Chablis and Domaine Gilbert Picq is the lucky owner of just 0.5 hectares on this slope. Despite the fact that the vines were planted not so long ago (in the year 1990), this wine already represents the absolute class of this special terrroir. This gives the wines an exceptional richness and complexity, also noted by the Parker reviewers. The 2017 vintage was described as: " elegantly satiny and pure, with excellent concentration, ripe acids and a long, saline finish. Stylish and complete, this Chablis is well worth seeking out. "
Volume 2018 does not yet have a Parker review, but if you look at the reviews of volumes 2017, 2019 and 2020 (all at or above 92 points), this certainly promises something!
Today Gilbert Picq's estate is owned by Gilbert's two sons Didier and Pascal and his daughter Marilyn Picq. The vineyards are managed by Pascal, Didier leads the vinification in the cellars and Marilyn is in overall charge. The Picq winery owns a total of 13 hectares of vineyards, of which 2 hectares are Premier Crus and 1 hectare with old vines of around 50 years old. Picq is a classic example of how to make truly amazing wines. The winery regularly receives very positive reviews from international wine journalists. For example in Wine Spectator and guides such as Gault Millau and Guide Hachette, who praise the house and winemaker Didier Picq for the continuous pursuit of quality.
