The De Boüard family is known for its excellent mastery of the winemaking processes: Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and Jean-Bernard Grenier are considered the “recreators” of Château Angélus . In fact, they have worked all their lives to make Château Angélus what it is today: a world-renowned domain steeped in culture and history with a worldwide reputation. It was then that Coralie de Boüard, the daughter of Hubert de Boüard, born on the Angelus property, grew up and then worked for ten years with her father in this famous castle. To fulfill a personal wish, Coralie de Boüard and her husband bought the Tour Musset in Castel, a Montagne Saint-Emilion, which she renamed, to perpetuate the name and transfer the quality and reputation to its new project. Located in Saint-Emilion, near Château Fombrauge, Fleur Cardinale, Valandraud and Troplong Mondot, the terroir of Château Clos de Boüard enjoys a very good geographical position.
The vineyards are 30Ha in size and are located in the Montagne Saint-Emilion on a clay-limestone soil. 19.6 hectares are Merlot, 7.3 hectares are Cabernet Franc and 2.6 hectares are Cabernet Sauvignon. The average age of the vines is over 40 years old. Harvesting is done manually with a Mistral sorting table and an optical eye machine, after which the oenologist: Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and the winemaker Coralie de Boüard de Laforest get to work. They first do a pre-fermentation (soaking) at 7.5 to 10°C (46 to 50°F). The alcoholic fermentation lasts between 3-5 weeks and the fruit from the individual plots is vinified separately. The wine ages for 18 to 24 months in barrels, half of which are new French oak. The blend: 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Francen, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
The Château Clos de Boüard is the showpiece and the first wine. The wine has a beautiful deep intense ruby red color. In the nose, the wine is intense and challenging with ripe fresh fruit (strawberry and cherry) and notes of smoke, sweet spices and an elegant floral character. A gourmet, charming and harmonious wine with rich and silky tannins. The finish is intense, long and fresh. Accessible in its youth thanks to its balance, the precision of its tannins and its tension, this cru has great aging potential for the more patient among us.
