2019 Château Chasse-Spleen
Château Chasse-Spleen is one of the top houses in Moulis-en-Médoc. It is not a Grand Cru Classé, but it is not inferior in quality and even performs better on a regular basis. For a long time Chasse-Spleen had the 'Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel' status, but in 2003 the château itself stepped out of the ranking. “I have reservations about the principle of a hierarchy. There will always be the disgruntled few that will not accept being left out. There will always be legal proceedings. Consumers want stability, not court cases”, says Jean-Pierre Foubet, managing director of Château Chasse-Spleen.
Château Chasse-Spleen, together with Château Poujeaux, is the most important winery in Moulis. Although classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionelle, the wine surpasses many Medoc wines from the Grand Cru Classé. Chasse-Spleen has always produced good wines, but the quality has improved greatly after the acquisition in 1976 by the Taillan group, who also manage Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. The château was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband died in 1992 while hiking in the Pyrenees. The company is now owned by daughter Claire.

Chasse-Spleen is the star of the municipality of Moulis next to Château Poujeaux. Already since the early 1800's when during a visit by Lord Byron in 1821 he spoke the memorable words: "Quel remède pour chasser le spleen", and in Dutch "what a remedy to cleanse the spleen" to which the Château is said to be name derives, Chasse-Spleen is an exceptionally good wine.
