2019 Bertrand et Axelle Machard de Gramont Vosne-Romanée

Domaine Bertrand Machard de Gramont – also known as Domaine Axelle Marchard de Gramont, or just Axelle is a great house from Burgundy which operates (certified) organic. Domaine Bertrand Machard de Gramont is a relatively small estate originating from Nuits-Saint-Georges. It has a total of six hectares, located mainly in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, but also with plots in Vosne-Romanée and Vergy. The domain has family ties with the estate Machard de Gramont in Premeaux and the estate Chantal Lescure in Nuits-Saint-Georges. It was founded in 1983 by Bertrand Machard de Gramont (father of Axelle) when his family domain was divided into three parts. Until then, Bertrand had worked on the family estate after a time at Domaine de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny, under the direction of Alain Roumier, the longtime director there. Axelle Machard de Gramont returned to Burgundy in 2004 to take on the vigneronne challenge. She now runs the estate, with support from her father.

This Machard de Gramont Bourgogne comes from the famous AOC Vosne-Romanée appellation. The vineyard is a postage stamp where only a few hundred bottles are made in the good years. The vines are 65+ years old and are located on a terroir. Vosne-Romanée wine is produced in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits and in the neighboring commune of Flagey-Échezeaux. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée Vosne-Romanée may only be used for red wine, the main grape being Pinot noir. No other Pinot Noir wine from anywhere in the world has so far caused a furore, aroused the admiration or dominated prices as those of the vineyards around the village of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits.
