Thelema Mountain Vineyards is located on the southeastern side of the Simonsberg, with vineyards at an altitude of 530 meters above sea level. These are considered some of the highest elevations in Stellenbosch - the high elevation and soil profile are ideal for the production of premium wine grapes. Thelema believes that the quality of the grapes is the single most important factor in making a serious premium wine.
2018 was a warm, dry vintage with a late start to the harvest. This resulted in a much smaller yield, but incredibly well-structured wines with a nice intensity. The Thelema Merlot matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% new and 70% in 3rd or 4th filling. In the nose you will find bright, red fruit with a hint of spice in the background. On the palate you can taste the intensity of the vintages - with concentrated flavors and soft, elegant tannins. Hints of dark chocolate and vanilla pod complete this wonderfully balanced wine.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards is situated on the South Easterly side of the Simonsberg Mountain, with vineyards sitting at elevations of 530m above sea level. Sutherland Vineyards is the sister company of Thelema Mountain Vineyards, with the vineyards located in Elgin. The wines are a true expression of the cool-climate conditions that make Elgin world renowned.
The Elgin Valley, positioned 70km southeast of Cape Town in the Overberg area, is uniquely situated on an elevated plateau, enveloped by four mountain ranges.
Sutherland Vineyards, located merely 9km from the Atlantic Ocean, at altitudes ranging from 140 to 250m above sea level, benefit from the nearby ocean, creating optimal cool climate conditions. Warm sunny days are complemented by cool nights, creating the ideal conditions for wine grape growing.
The wines are characterised by their linear, accessible, and contemporary qualities. The essence of Thelema runs through to that of Sutherland - both Thelema Mountain Vineyards and Sutherland Vineyards mirror one another. Sutherland wines are crafted and bottled at Thelema Mountain Vineyards in Stellenbosch.
