Description
This Spanish top wine is produced by winery Teso La Monja, an exclusive winery, one of the beautiful wineries of Hermanos Eguren.
Only 804 bottles have been made of the bodega's pinnacle wine - the Teso de Monja. A true masterpiece of winemaking. The wine comes from a cool vineyard of only 1.8HA with extremely old vines (150 years and older - pre-phylloxera) that give an incredibly high maturity. The bunches are picked and selected per grape and completely manually destemmed and manually crushed by a team of 55 very experienced people who do this every year. The wine ferments in an open top oak barrel followed by malolactic fermentation in an ovoid oak barrel. It matures in 3 brand new Bordeaux barrels for about 24 months. This top wine from Teso La Monja has an unprecedented amount of layers. With every sniff and sip something else emerges such as spices, smoke, toast, balsamic notes of incense and cigars. Red and black fruits and oak also come back on the palate with a crazy aftertaste.
The wine is packed in a very nice wooden box containing a dummy bottle for display and a filled bottle for the cellar. All numbered, of course.
Fact: There is a lot of messing around with cult wines these days, so certainly with this wine. We are the official importer and you can check through the website of Teso la Monja if you have an official bottle issued by an importer. You can then be sure that you do not accidentally have a counterfeit or refilled bottle. You can do this at: http://www.sierracantabria.com/en/wineries/teso-la-monja/teso-la-monja-wine/
Sierra Cantabria Mágico 2019 and Teso La Monja 2018, included in the exclusive 'Liga del 99' of the 38th Gourmets Wine Guide
Excellence is rewarded with the highest scores for Sierra Cantabria Mágico 2019 (DOCa Rioja) and Teso La Monja 2018 (DO Toro), which are already part of the prestigious 'League of 99' of the Gourmets Group.
20 de abril de 2023 - Once again, Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria has reached excellence with the inclusion of two of its wines in the 'League of 99' of the GuÃa Vinos Gourmets, which this year has celebrated a new edition in which its exclusive wines have received the maximum score awarded by the Guide; 99 points.
Sierra Cantabria Mágico 2019' (DOCa Rioja) and Teso La Monja 2018 (DO Toro) are included in the 'Honor Roll' of this Guide, receiving the highest score, thanks to the singularities they offer and their careful winemaking. Wines that last over time, elegant and with identity, which make them unique.
Of Sierra Cantabria Mágico 2019 he highlights "its attractiveness" because "it is extraordinary within its genre". For his part, Teso La Monja 2018 receives the words of the winery's winemaker, Marcos Eguren, who recognizes that this wine "is an invitation to enjoy the magic of Tinta de Toro, that intimate link between a unique vineyard and its environment". A wine, in short, "born to be a legend, embraced by a privilege that very few can achieve. A natural heritage that only the passage of time can give".
Qualifiers that can be combined to describe the wines included in this 'League of 99' of the 38th Gourmets Wine Guide 2023 (GWG), chosen by the Tasting Committee through a strict blind tasting and delivered during the 36th Gourmet Salon in Madrid.
Precisely this Wednesday, April 19, Marcos Eguren has traveled to the IFEMA Gourmet fair to receive this distinction that reinforces the work done by the winery.
Also from the Club de Gourmets have highlighted from Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria "the work and labor of the brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren". Two personalities who have inherited the passion of his father to get the best virtues of his collection of vineyards. Only in this way they manage to produce expressive wines in which "a renewed classicism of Rioja is maintained in their work philosophy, nor do their powerful and balanced reds from the Teso La Monja winery, which year after year, after almost three decades of experience , know how to place among the most outstanding wines both in the area and in Spain".

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
