Emilio Moro is seen as the example of the winemaker in the Dueros (benchmark producer). Malleolus comes from the Latin word Majuelo which means 'little vineyard. The tempranillo grapes come from vines ranging between 25-75 years old. The Malleolus is only made in the good years.
The 2018 vegetative cycle started with an extremely rainy April and May, which slowed the budding of the vines somewhat. Temperatures were close to normal for the region, except during the final stage of ripening, when they were above average, resulting in optimum ripeness and good balance in the grapes, especially due to the somewhat delayed start due to the rain. The many snow/rain in winter and spring has also ensured that the grapes have not had any water stress, so 2018 was an excellent year.
The Malleolus is a Tinto Fino 100% variety (the Emilio Moro clone of the Tempranillo) and has been macerated with its own skins for 18 days. After malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats, it is aged in French oak barrels. In the glass, the wine has a very deep, intense cherry red color. This Malleolus presents an intense concentration of fresh red fruit - a result of the low yield of the old vineyard. It has class, elegance, ripe aroma, good intensity and great personality. The balance between ripeness and freshness is excellent, and the months of aging in the 500 liter barrels have given the Malleolus a very nice complexity. It is powerful and structured and on the palate with good balance and a long, sustained passage.
The Malleolus has a very showy, seductive nose of smoked bacon, roasted coffee, cereals, violets, cherries and raspberries with lots of spice and very well integrated oak. The taste is medium to full-bodied with nice refined tannins. Beautiful for now but will certainly improve over the years.
This beautiful Ribera del Duero wine belongs to the exclusive import of Grandcru wines and this version is a 3 liter Jeroboam or a double magnum packed in a beautiful box.
