In 1973, René Lamy and Thérèse Pillot, both born into real wine-growing families, married and started their domain in the Hameau de Morgeot on the outskirts of Chassagne-Montrachet. The PILLOT family traces its origins back to the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet in 1595. The Lamy-Pillot wine estate is a family estate that works on 20 hectares of vineyards, spread over 27 different appellations, mainly located in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. Today the domain is owned by daughters Florence and Karine and their husbands. Florence and her husband Sebastien Caillat are now responsible for the vinification. Florence was educated in Beaune, while Sebastien Caillat was educated in Strasbourg and Dijon. In addition to the training, they both completed many internships, at home and abroad, before taking over the cellar in 1998.
The 1er Cru Morgeot comes from a Premier Cru vineyard in the Chassagne Montrachet called: Morgeot. The vineyard is 33 Ares in size with a south-east location, from which around 2,000 bottles are made in the good years. The vineyard was planted in 1970 and is located on a limestone plateau, which gives the typical minerality but also for an ideal water management in both the wet and dry periods.
The Lamy-Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot is a very elegant mineral white wines naturally made from 100% chardonnay. The style of winemaking is characterized at Lamy-Pillot in all their wines in a dosed and supportive way of using wood. The mineral notes of the beautiful terroir are not overgrown by excessive use of wood and the fruit comes out nicely in all cuvées. The Les Vergers has been aged for around 16 months in oak barrels, with a maximum of 25% new oak and with weekly battonage. The wine is very well balanced from its youth but with some years of aging the wine will become even more beautiful. Very juicy & elegant.
Just like the Morgeot Rouges, this Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru "Morgeot" is difficult in its first years. The wine is then still closed, but this wine (certainly from the beautiful 2018) comes loose with a number of years of aging. The tannins and acids then merge wonderfully and suddenly the wine becomes creamy, with a beautiful yet light butterscotch, white flowers, white and yellow fruit. In the mouth elegant, mineral and a fantastic aftertaste. A beautiful Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru to keep for a few more years and has a drinking window to at least 2035.
