In the beautiful area of Constantia, owner Lars Maack and winemaker Brad Paton actually only produce wines in the top segment: fresh and full-bodied wines. The slowly maturing climatic conditions with cold nights and moderate daytime temperatures translate into fresh, crisp and full-bodied wines.
The Buitenspiratie Meifort is a blend dominated by Cabernet Franc supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, so with the typical Bordeaux grapes. The Meifort is given 24 months to mature in oak barrels. The result is a beautifully aged wine, ripe and with a long aftertaste. In the glass, the Meifort has a sparkling fresh ruby red color. In the nose we smell full and warm notes of elegant plums, red cherries, tobacco and a hint of vanilla as a result of the oak aging. In the mouth the wine is full bodied, creamy but certainly also with good acids so that the wines have a nice backbone. The Buitenspiratie Meifort is a wine with an excellent price/quality ratio and is a good accompaniment to strong (grilled) meat dishes, lamb, game, pastas, pizzas and spicy cheeses.
Judgment De Grote Hamersma: 8.5
Bordeaux trio fully aged in oak. Thus, a solid amount of black currants, plums, dark cherries, roasted peppers, bay leaves, hefty tannins and a huge urge to roast or grill large and compelling meats are not entirely unexpected. An impressive amount of wine for this money.
The history of the South African winery Buitenverwachting goes back to 1773. Wijnhuis Buitenverwachting introduced the concept of environmentally friendly agriculture, which is better for the land, the worker and less pollution. From 1773, this winery has had no fewer than 16 owners, some of whom have faced many debts.
Despite this history, the winery flourished in 1825, led by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Henry of Constantia. In 1981, when the winery was owned by the Mueller family, the vineyards were explored, which led to extensive replanting of the various vineyards. This led to the largest harvest ever for Buitenverwachting in 1985. The winery has since undergone many modernizations, including a completely renovated winery.
