Amarone, the classic wine made from dried grapes from the Valpolicella region, is another relatively new and exciting venture for the Pieropan family. This one stems from the desire to test their skills with the Valpolicella area which, although a good neighbor of Soave, is very different and completely unique. It also stems from the desire to make a top red wine that is both rich and structured, but also elegant and fine and naturally in line with the entire Pieropan range.

This wine is made from the grape varieties Corvina (60%), Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina (30%) and old traditional Valpolicella varieties (5%) that come from southern vineyards, with calcareous clay soils, located at an altitude of 350- 500m above sea level. The grapes are picked by hand in September and then dried naturally. The grapes are then pressed and destemmed. The must is fermented at 23-24°C for about 30 days, during which time it is continuously pumped over. Finally, the wine ages in 500 liter barrels for 36 months, followed by 1 year in the bottle before being released on the market.

This characterful wine shines out of the glass with its beautiful intense ruby red color. The wine has an intoxicating perfume of black cherries, blackberries and plums on the nose. Complex and rounded on the palate, with a powerful structure that supports the fruit and a nice freshness on the finish. A wine of great character with the potential to age well. This wine is an excellent combination with game dishes, grilled or stewed meat and strong-tasting and ripe cheeses. Also delicious to serve at the end of a nice dinner. Serve at 16-18°C.

Vineyard for 2017 Pieropan Amarone della Valpolicella Vigna Garzon BIO

The Italian winery Pieropan is located in Soave, near Verona in the famous wine region of Veneto.

Leonildo Pieropan is considered the godfather of Soave. The wines are made from the grapes garganega and trebbiano from the hills around the city of Soave. The special cuvée La Rocca, made from late-picked grapes, is brought up on French oak and wins many international prizes. Andrea and Dario continue the work of their father and, in addition to the famous Soave, also make red wines of exceptional quality. After studying regional grape varieties, terroir and microclimate, the company bought vineyards and real estate in Cellore d'Ilasi (Valpolicella and Amarone) in 1999. A beautiful Valpolicella, Ruberpan and a complex and rich Amarone are now made from corvina, corvinone, rondinella and croatina veronese. The old 15th century monastery on the domain, Villa Cipolla, is currently being restored and converted into a luxury agriturismo.
