2017 Hermanos Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz
The philosophy of Vina Sastre is clear: “Create a small production with the utmost care.” The cultivation of the vineyards has been ecological since the beginning, based on the idea that quality of the soil and the individuality of each vine is reflected in the wine. The whole process is natural – no mineral fertilizers are used, nor any inorganic pesticides or chemical products.
Ribera del Duero has specific climatic conditions that are vital for the development of the vineyards and the ripening of the fruit. It is a continental climate with temperatures reaching 40°C in summer and dropping to -15°C in winter. The vineyards of Sastre are located in the middle of the area of origin. In the north they are protected from the typical strong winds by a large plantation of pine trees. This creates a microclimate. The soil consists mainly of lime, clay and sand.
The grapes of Pago de Santa Cruz come from a specific vineyard in the hamlet of Santa Cruz, along the Duero River, located at an altitude of 800m. The sticks are at least 64 years old. The grapes are harvested manually, which allows for a very careful selection. Upon arrival in the cellar, they are de-rusted and gently pressed, after which juice and peels undergo alcoholic fermentation and further maturation. After removing the skins, the wine rests until it undergoes its lactic acid fermentation. Finally, the wine matures for 18 months in new American oak barrels (225l).
Intense aromas of chocolate, ripe black and red fruits mixed with a certain spiciness. In the mouth at first some mineral attack with notes of smothered and toasted oak, fused with the fruit. The finish is balanced with lots of fruit and vanilla from the wood.
Robert Parker speaks of Vina Sastre as the 'benchmark estate'. Unfiltered and organically grown and produced. Some extra bottle aging will make this wine even more beautiful, hence our advice not to try the first bottle until 2020/221 and can then safely be stored until 2026+. Super Ribera.
