2017 Gianfranco Fino SN Rosé Spumante
The Michelin guide for restaurants, the Vini d'Italia from publisher Gambero Rosso for the best Italian wines. The latest edition was recently published, which judges on the basis of the quality of the wine and its continuity over the years. Michelin gives stars, the Gambero gives glasses. Tre Bicchieri (3 glasses) is the ultimate rating. The guide is 1000 pages thick, reviewed 2,350 producers and more than 10,000 wines. However, this guide remains the most important judge of wines in Italy and the wines of Gianfranco Fino have been voted the absolute number 1. Also in the June / July edition of Winelife 2 pages are devoted to the great wines of Gianfranco.
This noble rosé spumante is cult winemaker Gianfranco Fino's declaration of love to his wife Simona Natale (SN) on the occasion of her birthday. It had to be something special, and when Gianfranco puts his heart into it, he puts his heart and soul into it. The base wine is made from 100% Negroamaro and aged for 7 months in used barriques to give it a powerful structure. It is bottled for 36 months for the second fermentation and rests for another 12 months after disgorging before being marketed in perfect harmony.
As everything is quite extreme with Gianfranco Fino, this also applies to this Italian Champagne. The vineyard is located in Salento near the sea at an altitude of 90 meters on a clay and limestone plateau. The Negroamaro vineyard is only 1 Ha in size and is only harvested between 400-800 grams of only the finest berries. After this manual harvest, the grapes are placed in plastic boxes and transported by refrigerated truck to avoid premature fermentation. The grapes receive a 2nd selection on the sorting table and then the grapes are destemmed and softly crushed with a cold maceration in stainless steel tank of 70 hl, 24 hours contact of the skins with the must; after fermentation, the must is immediately transferred to French oak barriques. Tirage is made after approx. 7 months of oak maturation and dégorgement after approx. 36 months on the yeasts, after which this wine is bottle-aged for approx. 12-14 months. This Gianfranco Fino SN Spumante is made like a champagne (method traditional), so with a double fermentation.
On the nose, the Gianfranco Fino SN is a powerful potpourri of red fruits and spicy yeast notes: crisp red cherries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries together with dark bread crust, butterscotch, brioche and white pepper. The nose is very intense and, despite the long aging on the yeast, does not yet show any notes of ripening, but also looks slightly citrusy and very fresh. In the mouth you immediately feel the fruit of the Negroamaro grape variety such as blueberries and cherries. Then you notice the incredibly fine perlage, never intrusive. The Spumante Simona Natale is a unique wine from Apulia. Gianfranco has not tried to copy a rosé champagne, but has launched this powerful Negroamaro grape variety - a rosé sparkling wine of the extra class that is incomparable. This is a great aperitif but gastronomically this is an almost ideal wine and goes well with many different dishes and of course delicious with antipasti, risotto, veal and the aromatic vegetable kitchen
