This delicious organic Riesling wine comes from the Kirchensteig vineyard, a very 'lean' terrain that slopes to the east. Similar to the Steinleithn vineyard, the Kirchensteig vineyard also has very little soil above the rocks. The terroir is "skeletal" developed from crystalline granulite. Granulite is metamorphic - or converted - rock that is pale and sometimes appears violet with purple streaks of dark biotite mica. The grapes for this wine were harvested manually in early November and put in small boxes. Then: pressing the whole bunches, clarifying the juice through natural sedimentation and a very slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks (almost 1 year), raising on the lees until December, and finally bottling in December.
This Riesling comes from the Kremstal in Niederösterreich, the most important wine region of Austria. The Kremstal area is located on both sides of the Danube, around the city of Krems. Producer of this delightful Riesling is the Geyerhof quality winery whose vineyards lie on the south side of the Danube below the famous Göttweig monastery. Wine is the focus of daily life on Geyerhof. Joy and respect for life determine the actions and method. The winery was first mentioned in the municipality archives in the 12th century and has been in the family's hands since the 16th century. Ilse and Josef Maier have passionately cultivated 23 hectares of vineyards here since 1988. Maria & Josef, the following generations, have joined the family business since 2015. Mase and her son make organic wines that are juicy and friendly at Geyerhof in Kremstal. For the various vineyards of Geyerhof click here .
Geyerhof always chooses to release the wines later, among other things because their natural fermentation often proceeds slowly and the wines therefore do not present so well the year after harvest. 2016 Was a wet year in Kremstal until the beginning of August. A huge challenge, especially if you work organically! The moderate flowering was a blessing in the end: the limited number of racemes matured well in August and September and could be brought in well up to October. The limited quantities ensured nice concentration, the cool vintage for elegance and fineness and the necessary acids to ripen.
This Riesling Kirchensteig is pale golden yellow in color and has very nice, refined notes of meadow herbs and white peach on the nose. The wine has a pleasant sweetness (23.4 g of residual sugar) and is full of finesse in the mouth with a fresh acidity structure and a mineral touch in the nice long finish. The wine has an excellent aging potential: Robert Parker (see under Rating Tab) predicts that this elegant wine will certainly shine in 5 to 10 years, so patiently waiting will be rewarded!
This wine can be widely used at the table with most fish and seafood dishes, white meat, spicy Eastern dishes and with a sweet dessert.
The wine is certified organic.
