Domaines Paul Mas was founded in 1892. The current owner is Jean-Claude Mas and he is without a doubt the pioneer in the revival of the Languedoc as a region for quality wines. Jean-Claude characterizes his wines as 'Le Luxe Rural', rural luxury. With international grape varieties he has given the Languedoc 'new world' allure. And with his fashionable wines from local grapes, he has made the local character of the Languedoc hip again among wine lovers. Hubrecht Duijker rightly calls Jean-Claude Mas a 'wine wizard' and at Grandcruwijnen we are the only ones in the Netherlands who also carry the high-end Grandcru's from Paul Mas.

It was originally called 'Laurinya'. This centuries-old terroir is located in the Aspres, near the town of Thuir, home of the Byrrh aperitif wines. An estate of 60 hectares around a renovated 'mas' or farm and a winery adapted to the latest vinification techniques, make Lauriga a reference and quality domain. It is noteworthy that part of the Lauriga vines are located on old terraces with very stony soil, in the form of rolled pebbles that heat up quickly and whose virtues have always been appreciated by the elderly. The diversity of its terroir allows the development of a subtle palette of wines.

Château Lauriga was originally an authentic family estate, which has been owned by the French-Catalan Clar family for many years. A few years ago, Jean-Claude Mas was given the opportunity to take over the family domain. The Carignan, Grenache, Syrah grapes come from the sandy vineyards of the Côtes des Catalanes in the south of France. The terroir is characterized by clay, limestone and gravel. The vineyard is flooded by the Tramontane wind that keeps the vineyards in top condition without intervention. The diversity of the Lauriga terroir makes it possible to produce wines with a subtle palette of aromas and flavors. For Château Lauriga, caring for the environment and preserving biodiversity is a top priority, as well as caring for the people who work in the vineyard. When the vineyards were restructured in the 1990s, they were replanted in relation to the path of the sun (to optimize the effects of photosynthesis on the complexity of aromas) and also towards the Tramontane, so as to avoid wind damage to the vines to prevent.

After the manual harvest, the grapes undergo fermentation with regular pumping to obtain more color and tannins. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. The wine then undergoes maturation for 6 months in French and American oak, partly used. In the glass, the Lauriga Cuvée Bastien Réserve is garnet red with purple hues. In the nose we smell ripe red fruit, jam and notes of licorice and sweet spices. In the mouth the wine is very balanced with soft tannins, red fruit and something smoky in the aftertaste. Delicious with duck breast with cranberry sauce.
