2019 Muga Rioja Reserva Seleccion Especial
The Muga Reserva is for the true Rioja enthusiast. Herbs, espresso, blackcurrants and blackberries. Big tears and a beautiful long aftertaste. The Reserva Selección Especial is aged on more new French wood than the regular Reserva. Partly due to the longer maceration prior to fermentation, this wine is more modern in style than the regular Reserva and the very classic Gran Reserva. This Selección Especial only leaves the bodega after approximately 7 years of maturation. The first 6 months the wine undergoes aging in large oak barrels. Then 30 months in new and 2nd year oak (barriques). Clarification with albumin (made from egg white) provides the authentic character that Muga is known for. The wines are not filtered.
Bodegas Muga, a family business founded in 1932, is known for its traditionally made Riojas. They mainly make red, some white, rosé and a cava. Muga now owns 248 hectares of vineyard in the mountainous part of Rioja Alta. The average age of the sticks is 25 years. In addition, Muga controls 148 hectares of vineyards from farmers under contract. At least 80% is sold in Spain, the rest is export. Muga is internationally regarded as one of the bodegas that still makes Riojas in a very traditional way and very successfully. Four of our own tonneliers make and repair the more than 20,000 barrels for classical maturing in French and American oak. Bodegas Muga works practically organically in the vineyard and only fertilizes with homemade compost from prunings and sheep manure. Brothers Manuel and Isaac Muga run this beautiful family business, assisted by their sons Jorge (vineyard + oenologist), Isaac Jr. (oenologist), Manuel Jr. and Juan (sales).
