2016 MicroBioWines Ismael Gozalo La Banda del Argilico Blanco
This Microbio La Banda del Argilico Blanco is a beautiful Verdejo by the winemaker Ismael Gozalo who started in 1998 with his label MicroBioWines. The winery is located in the town of Nieva, just outside Segovia in the Rueda wine region. The winery has been working from generation to generation with complete dedication to making top wines. The wines have a personality, are authentic and surprising. We work with respect for the soil, nature and the environment and no additives are used for winemaking. Ismael is one of the top Spanish winemakers and is certainly the most innovative winemaker in Spain. The verdejo grapes used for this wine come from a sandy soil with gravel and clay plates. After careful harvesting, the grapes are crushed and fermentation takes place with their own yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine then ripens for at least 5 months on its own lees, also in stainless steel.
The La Banda del Argillico has a precise nose with balsamic vinegar and medicinal aromas, and a very tasty palate with a few salty flavors plus the classic Verdejo bitterness in the aftertaste. The grapes were harvested later to await the development of flavors, but then he added wine produced from the early-picked grapes, "verjus" (or verjuice) to give extra acidity. The wine has body, volume and a leesy character. The wine is not filtered and bottled.

MicroBioWines do not use any additives for winemaking. In addition, the yeasts responsible for fermenting the grapes are always specific to each vineyard. For this reason, the wines clearly represent the different vintages. According to the cycle in the field, fermentations are faster or slower and this is not a matter of concern for this winery. Finding the balance is always the most difficult and that is something they have achieved with a high level of effort and a lot of perseverance. Because the wine is not filtered or clarified, the winery is very alert to sudden temperature fluctuations and the bottle can therefore give some precipitation.
