The Bellavista Gran Selezione is next to the L'Apparita the top model of Castello Di Ama. The Bellavista vineyard is 22.82 hectares and the Vigneto Bellavista Chianti Classico has been made since 1978 only in the very best years. After fermentation and pressing, the young wine is transferred to French oak barriques, 40% of which are new, and matures here for 15 months. The wine is deep purple ruby red in color. In the nose aromas of black cherries, red berries, licorice and Virginia tobacco. In the taste palette notes of ripe small black fruit, plum, salmiak and wild mint, which are accompanied by a long lasting mineral aftertaste with ripe tannins and elegant acids.
The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista comes from fruit from one of the most beautiful vineyards of Castello di Ama with wide exposure and plenty of sunshine. The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista offers an unreal level of intensity and depth and perfectly integrated tannins Of these three single-vineyard Gran Selezione wines (Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo), the Vigneto Bellavista is the most complete, but also the most linear and streamlined in mouthfeel. The 2015 was already beautiful, but as with many Tuscan wines, 2016 beats everything and it is not surprising that this wine has received these high scores. Drink this wine from 2022 and you can safely keep it in the cellar until 2040+.
The winery of this small hamlet of the same name is the cradle of an important research into the right sangiovese clone for chianti. Winemaker Marco Palanti was looking for the best clones for Ama in his own way and his life's work is astonishing to say the least. Where chianti used to struggle with an image of diluted wine, Castello di Ama was able to turn this image into that of high-quality wines in less than one generation. Not only the vineyards were looked at, but also the possibilities of pruning, the ripening of the grapes and of course also the improvement potential in the winery. Over the years it has been possible to improve the clones step by step. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 390 and 450 meters. The soil is heavy clay with a lot of gravel and pebbles. The vineyards were planted between 1964 and 1978. At Castello Di Ama you do not only get art in the glass, because in and around the authentic villa there are sublime works by great contemporary artists.
