2015 Podere le Ripi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene
Love and respect for nature and its vineyards characterize owner Francesco Illy. As a member of the famous Illy family, which is known for its high quality coffee and espresso, it is only natural for Francesco to strive for excellence. You can taste this in the beautiful biodynamic wines he produces on his 54 hectare estate in Tuscany.
That this approach has not gone unnoticed is apparent from the high scores that are achieved.
The unique wines of Podere Le Ripi have been achieved by proving particularly successful against the expectations of experts. Planting the vines much closer together than usual forces the roots to go deep into the ground, absorbing the various minerals from the various geological layers. Together with the great value that Podere Le Ripi attaches to a natural soil with flowers and other organisms without the addition of chemicals, a special terroir with recognizable aromas and structure is created. The wines of Podere Le Ripi rest for 36 months or longer in oak barrels and then another 8 months in cement. They are then aged for 1 to 3 years in the cellar in the bottle before being sold. The wines stand out for their special finesse, fruit, harmony and sufficient power.
Francesco Illy makes the wines together with Sebastian Nasello, oenologist who has been working at Podere Le Ripi since 2012. In February 2016 Sebastian Nasello won the Giulio Gambelli 2016 prize.
The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene is very elegant with many nuances, fruit, soft, harmony, finesse, round, a lot of depth and very seductive. The wine is dark and brooding in appearance with dark berry nuances and certain doses of exotic spices. The mouthfeel is velvety and slightly textured. The wine already looks nice to drink, but can be kept for a long time. It is a wine that has a lot and with every sip you discover new taste notes. Very nicely made. You can clearly taste the underground power in this refined wine. This is a Brunello di Montalcino with personality and level and you can taste it.
Podere le Ripi is a biodynamic winery in Montalcino with 133 hectares of forest, vineyards, and olive trees inhabited by a shepherd and his sheep until 1998. Uncontaminated soil with great plant diversity, surrounded by breathtaking views and clean air.
Currently, there are 75 hectares of biodynamic vineyards, rooted in woodland, olive groves, a vegetable garden, and fruit trees, all spread over two opposite Montalcino mountain slopes, with soils belonging to different geological eras. This is where Podere Le Ripi started the adventure in 1998, on the east side of Montalcino: Castelnuovo dell'Abate. In 2016 they expanded the vineyards on the west side, from the oasis-like environment of il Galampio.
