Very tasty, elegant Pinot Noir from the New Zealand winery Clos Henri, a special project in Marlborough that was started by the famous Bourgeois wine family from Sancerre, France.
Marlborough's Pinot Noir thrives best in the clay soils of the Southern Valleys, as the region's producers have proven experimentally. The vines for this Pinot noir are also located there. Following French tradition, the canes are also placed close together here to increase mutual competition and thus limit the growth potential of the canes. The young Pinot vines grow on three different soil types: broadbridge, wither clays, greywacke river stone. All grapes are picked in the early mornings to preserve the fresh and fruity character. This is also why fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in large oak barrels (7,500 liters) for 11 months. Large wooden barrels give less 'wood aromas' than small wooden barrels. This means that the aromatic intensity of Pinot Noir is retained.
In the glass the wine is light ruby red in color with the nose showing youthful aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries alternating with subtle layers of herbs and licorice. Plums and cherries dominate in the glass, but then make way for spices and wood tones. Slender tannins, juicy freshness with a soft, peppery aftertaste.
Serving temperature 12-16℃ and delicious with grilled portobello mushrooms. Also delicious, slightly chilled at the barbecue on a summer evening.
